27/06/08 2008 18's/20's NTL Update: The
18's NTL in 2008 is to include the 20's divisions as
well, due to the World Youth Cup being held in January
2009 in NZ. To this end, many of the Scorpions elite
juniors have been selected in the NSW schools sides
for the upcoming tournament and deserve our
congratulations. This means that an opportunity
opens up for other players to attend this elite
tournament, to further develop their touch skills
under the guidance of Scorpions junior coaches.
Coaches have been nominated for sides to attend the
2008 NTL and trials are being held for teams on the
20th July at 4pm at Doyle Park Parramatta.
Due to the great number of boys that have been
selected in the NSW School's sides, it is proposed to
select the under 20's Boy's team first under the
guidance of Dave Nolan and once finalised, a further
decision will be made into entering an 18's Boys team.
The coaches of both Boy's teams welcome all those
players interested to trial on the 20th July. If
the 18s team proceeds, a decision will be made in
relation to informing the coach at that time.
It is proposed to enter both an 18's and 20's Girl's
team at this stage and all players interested are
invited to attend the trial on the 20th July at Doyle
Park.
The tournament is to be held in Coffs Harbour from
Wednesday 17 Sept to Sat 20 Sept 2008. Players will be
required to be in Coffs Harbour by Tuesday 16 Sept
2008. It should be noted that there will be a cost to
attend the tournament and players will be required to
pay a $50 deposit at the first trial. If
you have any questions or require further information

NSWTA 14's/16's Regionals:
Following
on from a successful NTL by the Sydney Scorpions
Open's and Seniors teams, it has been the junior teams
that have really put the Sydney Scorpions on the map.
At the recent NSWTA 14's/16's Regionals held in
Forster on the weekend of 29th and 30th March, Sydney
Scorpions were named as the Champion Junior Permit
in NSW, thanks to the efforts of players, coaches and
managers of all 4 teams.
After an encouraging Junior State Cup in Wollongong by
all affiliates within the Scorpions region, selectors
had a difficult task in choosing players to represent
Sydney Scorpions at the 14's/16's Regional
Championships. Those selections were vindicated with
all 4 Scorpions teams making the semi finals, with 2
teams (Boy's 14's and Boy's 16's) taking out the
titles on offer and the Girl's 14's falling just short
in the final.
The coaches, managers and support staff had a huge
task in moulding those players selected, into
competitive teams in the short time frame between JSC
and the Regional Championships, and what a job they
did! The success of all 4 teams is a true indication
of the efforts of the coaches, and also reflects on
the tremendous job that the Scorpions Junior committee
is doing with the juniors in our region.
And the players, what can you say. Their behaviour,
off field dress and playing gear, were the envy of the
other permits and was backed up on the fields of play
with some amazing skills on show. It made all
involved, very proud to be associated with such a
group of fine young people.
Results:
Overall Championship
Sydney Scorpions 47 points

2008 NTL Wrap-up:
The 2008 combined Senior/Opens X-Blades National Touch
League proved a massive success with the tournament
concluding yesterday. Coffs Harbour's BCU
International Stadium was in spectacular condition and
saw some great touch being played across all the
divisions. Even the weather came to the party with
clear blue skies for the duration of the tournament.
The Sydney Scorpions this year arguably boasted the
best looking playing uniforms of all the permits with
a slick new design from Kombat. This was also matched
with some great off-field gear as well.
The Scorpions Men's 40's once again dominated their
division, as they have for some years now. They went
through the tournament undefeated and were triumphant
in the Final against a gallant Hunter Hornets side by
3-2. As per usual Tim Kitchingham and Brett Gillard
led from the front. David Cheung and Andrew Keyes were
the teams leading touch down scorers bagging eight
each.
The Scorpions Women's 40's won their Final 4-3 over
the Hornets whist
the Women's 27's failed to make the finals in a new
division where Victoria won their first piece of
silverware at the National titles. Unfortunately for
Phil Young and the Scorps Men's 50's, they missed
out on the final series this campaign.
In the Men's 30's division the Sydney Scorpions
continued to be the bridesmaids after going through
the tournament undefeated only to stumble at the
final hurdle going down 8-6 to a determined Sydney
Mets team. The team and management will be once
again left scratching their heads as to what they have
to do to win an elusive NTL title after being runners
up on six occasions. NTL debutant Brad "Lockie"
Mitchell won the teams Scorpion Medal for the Best &
Fairest for the tournament. Scorpions Chris "Rowdy"
Benfield was named TFA's Men's 30's Player of the
Series.
In the Opens divisions the Scorpions Mixed team went
down in the Plate Final by 5-4 against the ACT. Chloe
Donovan topped her teams touch down tally with four. A
young Scorpions Women's Opens team, under the guidance
of coaches Jason Martin & Gary Croft, lost their Plate
semi final 7-3 against the Crusaders. The team will no
doubt benefit from this year's NTL and will be
stronger next time around.
Finally in the Men's Opens division the Scorpions,
coached by Terry Cooper, played some extremely
entertaining touch throughout the tournament. In the
round games the Scorps won five games and lost only
one going down to arch rivals the Sydney Mets. This
set them up for a semi final clash against the red hot
Gold Coast Sharks. In a spectacular showdown it was
the Drumayne Day-Berg-Muir (Sharks) vs. Dylan Hennessy
(Scorpions) show, with both players heavily involved
in their teams numerous touch downs. A stand out for
the Sydney Scorpions was Captain Jamie Stowie who
scored a hat-trick of three magic touchdowns. His
Parramatta team mates Adam Lollback & Troy Malcom also
had strong games as did all the Scorps however in the
end
they went down 9-7 in front of a packaged and
enthralled crowd. Tim Barton from the Scorps finished
the tournament with an impressive eleven touchdowns.
Many thanks must go out to all the players and
management of the Sydney Scorpions teams for their
efforts on and off the field.
* Special thanks to Phil Young who helped secure the
fantastic training facilities at TG Millner Field,
Eastwood.
* Bill Slade and all the Scorps referees did the
permit proud with solid performances on the field this
year.
* Steve Cunningham led the Scorpions Medical staff
this year and thanks goes out to all of them for a
sterling effort in keeping our players on the park.
* 2008 was also the first year for the inaugural
Scorpions Dinner with all the teams gathering at the
Park Beach Bowling Club. In what will become a
tradition the Scorpions Medals for the
Best & Fairest from each team were named with the
awards named in honour of Melanie & Gary Croft in
appreciation for their years of tireless work for the
region. All the award recipients will be posted
on the web site in the near future.
So until the next Senior/Opens NTL in March 2009, the
Scorpions Executive Committee will continue to be
committed in raising the profile and
professionalism of the Sydney Scorpions with the
ambition of becoming the best possible NTL permit.
More info on the NTL wrap up

17/02/08 Junior State Cup 2008: The future is
certainly bright for the Sydney Scorpions region with
so many Scorpion affiliates making it
to the semi finals (top 4 teams in the state) in their
age divisions. Close to 10,000 players, officials,
referees, parents and supporters converged on a
massive 26 fields at Wollongong with the rains
amazingly holding off this year.
With no drop-offs being used the first try in the
knock-out stage of the competition is worth 3 points -
with each try after that 2. Highlights from around the
Scorpion affiliates included the Manly 10 Girls who
won their title 5-0 against Wagga. In the 10 Boys the
Parramatta Eels went down to rivals and eventual
winners Penrith 5-2.
In the 12 Girls Manly lost in their semi final 7-6 to
Newcastle City. In the 12 Boys an inspirational Ryde
Eastwood lost in their semi final to a strong Wagga
Wagga who went on to win the division. In the 14
Girls Manly went down to eventual winners Wagga Wagga
5-2 in the semi final. Whilst in the 14 Boys it was an
all Scorpion Grand Final with Manly too strong for
Ryde Eastwood winning 13-4.
In the 16 Boys Parramatta upset Manly 3-0 in the semi
final and went on to appear in a well deserved Grand
Final. Likewise the 16 Girls from Parramatta also made
it to their Grand Final against Tamworth.
Finally, in the 18 Boys a highly fancied Manly went
down to eventual winners Wallsend 8-7 in their semi
final.
Congratulations to all players, especially all the
teams mentioned above as many of them competed in
divisions of up to 32 teams and to be in the final 4
teams in their division in NSW is an achievement to be
very proud of.

Congratulations to all Sydney Scorpion Referees
who were involved in the Vawdon Cup. This showed
dedication to the sport and personal sacrifice that
all of these referees have had to make during the past
three months. During the tournament there were some
memorable performances and with the coaching panel
taking every opportunity to lend a helping hand, the
referees certainly strived to do their best. The
finals series produced some great results for the
referees with Anthony Smith, Kim Perry, Bill Slade,
Bernie O’Donohue and Vic Rulewski all achieving the
ultimate of all being appointed to games on Grand
Final night. Well done to all.
Bill Slade

Scorpions Men's 40's 3rd year in a row National
Champions:
The Scorpions Men's 40's overcame an extremely
disappointing start to their title defence running out
to the cheers of only their own management staff, the
physio's and the Sun's 30's girls. The Scorps launched
into the Suns defence taking out their disappointment
and frustration on them and quickly ran out to a good
lead. Whilst never really troubled by the Garry
Lawless lead Suns who eventually scored a flurry of
three late disappointing tries, they ran out
convincing winners 8 - 5. David Cheung starred
for the Scorpions in the final and led from the front.
The wingers who had feasted on tries all week crossed
in the final several times. Peter Stephens scored what
must be a NTL record of 21 individual tries. Other
scorers in the final included Scott Collins 2, Andrew
Keayes, Jeff Cheung, Brett Gillard, David McDonald,
Derek Duguid & Peter Stephens.
